The “CityU Festival – Merdeka Day” event was organised by the Students Representative Council (SRC) for the 2023/2024 session in collaboration with STAAD, clubs, and societies. Held on August 22, 2024, the event aimed to celebrate Malaysia’s Independence Day and instil a sense of patriotism within the City University community. It also sought to educate participants about the nation’s history, the struggles behind its independence, and the cultural diversity that defines Malaysia.

The program took place at City University Malaysia, located in Petaling Jaya. It was attended by approximately 250 participants, including students and staff from the university. The event featured a variety of activities designed to engage and educate the audience. Among the highlights were the Patriotic Song Competition and a fashion show that showcased Malaysia’s traditional and ethnic attire. These activities provided a platform to appreciate and respect the diverse cultural heritage of the nation.

In addition to the competitions, clubs and societies opened booths at the university’s Boulevard area, allowing for interaction among participants while fostering community spirit. The inclusion of a Merdeka Booth Decoration Contest further added to the celebratory atmosphere, encouraging creativity and teamwork.

The event’s objectives were clear: to promote national pride, educate attendees about Malaysia’s independence, and strengthen the bond among the local and international members of the City U community. The program concluded with an award ceremony and performances by talent clubs, celebrating the winners of the various competitions held throughout the day.

Ultimately, the event was successful in achieving its goal of fostering inclusivity and national unity. Through the celebration of cultural diversity and shared history, the City U Festival – Merdeka Day created a space for meaningful conversations about identity, community, and patriotism​.
