City University Malaysia’s Faculty of Creative Industries recently collaborated with Brawijaya Malang Universitas on the “2000 Postcards” project, an initiative dedicated to fostering cross-cultural exchange and promoting sustainable cultural heritage in Malaysia and Indonesia. Held from October 15-16, 2024, the event aimed to bring together students, academics, and cultural enthusiasts to celebrate and preserve shared cultural values through art, workshops, and discussions.

The event commenced with an inspiring opening ceremony on October 15, featuring welcoming speeches from esteemed representatives, including Associate Professor Dr. Rosnizah Shaari, Vice Chancellor of City University Malaysia, and Professor Dr. Zuliati from Brawijaya Malang Universitas. A symbolic performance of the national anthems of Malaysia and Indonesia set the tone for the occasion, followed by a traditional dance by City University Malaysia students that highlighted Malaysia’s rich heritage.

One of the highlights of the first day was the fashion show, “Majestic Batik Threads: Malaysia’s Heritage Reimagined,” which showcased the versatility and beauty of Malaysian batik designs. This was complemented by a seminar discussing “Preserving Cultural Heritage for Future Generations: A Malaysia-Indonesia Perspective,”featuring insights from prominent speakers from both universities.

The seminar provided a platform for exploring strategies to safeguard cultural heritage and encouraged meaningful dialogue on the challenges and opportunities in heritage preservation.

Day two offered a creative twist, with a workshop on sketching in public spaces led by renowned Indonesian artist I Kadek Yudi Astawan, S.Sn., M.Sn. Participants were introduced to various sketching techniques that bring public spaces to life, allowing them to appreciate the nuances of Indonesian art and its role in cultural expression.

The event concluded with a film appreciation session that celebrated Indonesian arts and culture, further strengthening the cultural ties between Malaysia and Indonesia. The closing ceremony underscored the success of this cross-cultural initiative and reaffirmed both institutions’ commitment to preserving their nations’ cultural heritage.

The “2000 Postcards” project stands as a testament to the power of international collaboration in promoting cultural appreciation and sustainability. This meaningful exchange of ideas, creativity, and traditions will inspire future generations to cherish and protect their cultural heritage.
